The first few weeks of breastfeeding are HARD as hell for MANY reasons but one stands out in my mind – nipple pain. My plan of care served me well with Demi so I wanted to share it below.
Lanolin Cream – apply to the nipple before pumping. Don’t glob it on otherwise it could get into the pump and interfere with the suction. A thin layer works!

Medela Hydrogel Pads: Keep in the fridge and apply after feeding or pumping. They’re reusable so I would use one pair per day. I think four come in a pack so I stocked up so I’d have them for the first week or so.

Silverettes: Put a few drops of breastmilk after feeding or pumping and place them on the nipple before putting your bra back on. If your nipples are cracked it helps them heal!

Hot and Cold Packs: Keep in the freezer to soothe engorgement and then put in the microwave to help with clogs or encourage letdown.

If your nipples are in REALLY bad shape talk to your OB about a prescription for APNO cream (https://ibconline.ca/information-sheets/all-purpose-nipple-ointment-apno/). I didn’t need to use it with Demi, but did for Luke – my nipples were WOUNDED with him and it helped me heal literally overnight. MIRACLE!
