A fad diet, by definition, is a diet that becomes popular for a short time, similar to fads in fashion, without being a standard dietary recommendation, and often making unreasonable claims for fast weight loss or health improvements. There is no single definition of what is a fad diet, but they all share the same characteristics.
A fad diet will NOT be sustainable for the long term, and often comes with pitfalls during your time adhering, and after you’ve finished.
Here are your RED FLAGS to help you spot a fad diet, and run away.
*State foods you can or cannot eat
*Uses guilt or shame to “keep you on track.” Eg: No cheating or you have to start again!
*Suggests that food can change your hormonal or bodily chemistry
*Blames a specific food or hormone for weight problems
*Make claims that sound too good to be true via dramatic statements that are not back or refuted by reputable scientific organizations
*Requires the purchase of supplements, foods, or supplies by the same company for success
*Cherry-picks recommendations from studies that ignore differences among individuals or groups. Studies are executed by the company and not a third-party
*Relies on marketing or client anecdotes/testimonials to back the product
*Has coaches that are certified by the company and not a reputable governing body or scientific organization
Here’s another consideration: All fad diets REMOVE or RESTRICT something, whether it be a food or food group. AND all fad diets TRACK something. Whether it be points, calories, days, etc. That’s why they work temporarily.
