Gyms can be a REALLY intimidating space – the term “gymtimidation” is a legit thing, and even seasoned fitness enthusiasts get it from time to time.
I’m here to tell you – NO ONE is looking at you, and if they are, it’s probably out of admiration than anything else. Everyone started somewhere, and if someone is there to judge, that says more about them than you.
That being said, there are “rules” of the gym that can help you feel more at home and be respectful of those around you. If you nail the below, you’ll be golden and can put your intimidation aside.
1) Re-rack your weights IN THE PROPER PLACE as soon as you’re done with them. Not only do weights need to be put away (dumbbells, plates, etc.), but they should go in ascending numerical order. Don’t put the 10’s where the 40’s are supposed to go, okay? Pay attention and make sure you’re setting the next person up for success – they will pay it forward.
2) Do not stand directly in front of equipment you’re not using. Dumbbell racks are high-traffic areas, so make sure you give yourself space to utilize your desired set(s) while giving people the room to move around you to grab theirs.
3) Give everyone their own space – and that includes the mirrors. Be mindful of those who are working out around you. Some people will be moving laterally, walking, or incorporating a plyometric into their set, and overcrowding them will not only put them at risk for injury but you as well. Avoid walking in front of someone or standing in front of them, so their view of their reflection in the mirror is obstructed.
4) Be kind and allow others to “work in” on the equipment you’re using. If someone is waiting to use a piece of equipment you’re using, allow them to work while you rest. Keep tabs on how your setup may differ from theirs so you can easily revert to your machine settings or load. This may seem odd, uncomfortable, or unnatural at first, but I promise at one point or another you’ll want to “work in” someone else’s set, so treat others how you want to be treated!
If you cannot visualize this scenario picture, you have 3 sets of chin-ups to complete and are resting 2 minutes in between sets. You notice someone is waiting, and they approach you and say, “Hey can I work in?” You’d respond by stepping out of the way and say something like, “Of course – I’m resting for the next two minutes, does that work? Have at it.” They work while you rest, and they rest while you work until one person finishes and moves on.
5) Machines will usually be “saved” with a water bottle, towel, or another personal item. Don’t take a piece of equipment or assume it’s free just because someone isn’t there. They may be filling a water bottle or chatting with someone in passing. It is a dick move for someone to leave a “saved” space for more than 2 minutes, but that doesn’t mean you have to be a dick in return. Karma will always win!!
6) Keep your space tidy. I remind myself to take as little space as possible. I keep personal Items under benches and dumbbells I’m using at the moment tucked neatly next to said items. Obviously, take the space you need, but you don’t own the place, you know?
7) Wipe off your equipment when you’re done – no matter what
8) Keep your voice down, whether it be taking a quick phone call or talking with someone IRL. Gyms are actually really dangerous places, and people need to concentrate – you do too!
9) DO NOT WEAR FRAGRANCES OR PERFUME. There is nothing worse than someone’s fragrance overtaking a room – even after they’ve left. Put it on after your session!
Keep these rules in mind and your gymtimidation will be gone in no time.
