My Fatty Coffee Recipe

KATE-LEMERE

A lot of people ask me about Bulletproof coffee, a staple in my food regimen and a constant content cameo in my Insta stories. The Bulletproof brand is the brainchild of David Asprey,  who is a key player in the bio hacking movement. Unfamiliar with the term?

Biohacking (verb, noun):

(v): changing your environment from the inside-out so you have full control of your biology; using your body as your personal laboratory, finding the exact hacks that work for you.

I am an enthusiastic subscriber of a high-fat diet, and intermittent fasting and have looked to David (we’re on a first name basis) as a trusted resource. Let me clarify – I’ll admit he is on the EXTREME, and while the tentpole of my lifestyle revolves around a high-fat diet and intermittent fasting, I still indulge in moderation frequently, Hi, I need dessert like every fucking day. I am who I am.

I’m also a bit of a peasant, so I do not spend $40+ on my BP coffee. I also wait until I have, like, one K-cup before going to the store to replenish, so there is a 0% chance I’m pre-ordering all my shiz from the brand website. Instead, I make my own generic AF fatty coffee based on the principles of the Bulletproof brand.

  • Quality ingredients
  • High-fat source
  • No carbs
  • No sugar

You can make it too. It’s beyond easy.

Fatty Coffee
Serves 1

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbs MCT Oil
  • 1 Tbs Ghee*
  • 1 Cup of coffee

*I’ll alternate using Ghee with Kerrygold Grass Fed Butter, or my latest obsession, Artisana Coconut Butter. You can get them all at Whole Foods. The point of the ingredients is to be a full-fat source. Not all fat is created equally, which is why you have to read nutritional labels and understand what you’re buying carefully. I’ve tried using coconut oil but was always left with bloating and stomach aches. MCT oil works best for me.

Directions

  1. Brew a cup of coffee as you normally would
  2. In a blender combine the hot, brewed coffee, MCT Oil and Ghee (or alternative fat) for 20-30 seconds until fully mixed and super frothy
  3. Pour the frothy bullet proof coffee in a mug and enjoy

My “fatty coffee” can range anywhere from 100-250 calories. It’s my go-to solution when I don’t have time to eat. I sip it down and I’m satiated for a few hours. If you’re tracking calories you’ll need to deduct the coffee from your total caloric balance. A lot of people find success with high-fat diets, but those who fail tend to lose track of their calories (they add up quickly!).

  1. Hi Kate! Thanks for the great post. Quick question for ya – do you drink your bullet proof coffee in the late morning/early afternoon as your first “meal” when breaking your fast? Or is bullet proof coffee something that is OK to drink first thing in the AM when you are practicing IF and technically have not entered your feed window yet? Thanks for the insight!
