Cardinal Rules For Your First Group Exercise Class

Even the most passionate of exercisers find themselves in new territory every now and then. Whether it be a session with a new trainer, a new group exercise class or sweating solo at a gym while you travel, there are cardinal rules every first timer should follow to make the most out of their workout.

  1. Due Diligence
    • Do your research. Check out websites and social handles to get a feel for the workout, environment and and community. Pictures say a thousand words.
  2. Be Prepared
    • Most gyms have water bottles for purchase and complimentary towel service, but it doesn’t hurt to bring your own. Pack everything you may need from water bottles to hair ties, to bandaids. The more prepared you are the more focus you can dedicate to the workout itself and not the things you shoulda, woulda, coulda brought with you.
  3. Don’t Be on Time
    • Don’t be on time. Be early. While it may not seem like a big deal to roll in at the exact start of a workout, it’s a liability for the trainer and studio. Without a proper introduction to the class and facility you’re at risk of missing important introduction or injury by not knowing the flow of the workout or necessary equipment.
  4. Introduce Yourself x2
    • As comfortable as it can be to blend in and be a wall flower, push yourself to be outgoing and introduce yourself not only to the trainer, but to the front desk staff. They’re there to help you and it’s their job to acclimate you to the space and workout. Take advantage of it!
  5. Bounce Around
    • If your first time at a studio, class or with a trainer isn’t for you don’t give up! Every trainer has a different personality and a different rationale for training, bounce around until you find the right one for you.

Go forth! Explore a new frontier and take comfort you’ll be prepared for whatever comes your way.
