Healthy Airport Snack Hacks

Nothing can derail your fitness momentum faster than a mid-week work trip. I usually find myself in an airport 2 or 3 times a month between personal and work travel. It is possible to keep yourself clean on the road but like anything else takes some prepping and planning ahead of time.

DIY Snacks to Pack

These snacks are TSA approved and are whole food choices composed of mostly healthy fat to satiate and keep you full for hours. Add any of these snacks to your carry on for a foolproof way to stay on your game.

  • Macadamia Nuts: Just be careful to not over eat! A little goes a long way with these guys.
  • Avocado with Black Pepper and Sea Salt: Remove the pit and sprinkle a bit of lemon juice on the flesh to keep it from oxidizing. Wrap the avocado in paper towel and place in a ziplock bag to keep it fresh.
  • Justin’s Almond Butter Packets: It can be tough to find produce in an airport, but most kiosk stands have bananas and apples.
  • Prosciutto and Cheese Roll-ups: Make your own or buy these.
  • Protein Pancakes: Using a pre-made mix like Kodiak Cakes, or a scoop of multi-purpose protein powder mixed with water. Make ’em the night before but make sure they’ve cooled completely before you store them in a tupperware or ziplock.

Food Court Finds

  • Makeshift Bullet Proof Coffee: Ask for a small espresso cup of heavy whipping cream. Note, that’s not whipped cream, there is a difference. Add 2 or 3 tablespoons to your coffee for an alternative to a standard bullet proof coffee. There’s a little less fat, but zero carbs. It serves the same purpose and keeps you full for hours.
  • Burger or Chicken Salads: Find any grill to order a burger patty or chicken breast, hold the bun. Ask for extra lettuce, onion and tomato. Cut everything up to make a salad and dress with yellow mustard.
  • Wolfgang Puck and Chili’s Too: Both can usually be found as standalone restaurants or kiosks that have excellent salad choices. The dressing already packed on the side so you can control how much you’re adding.

Newsstands Buys

  • Pistachios: With or without the shell, these are a full fat source sold at most newsstands that are worth the money.
  • Quest Bars: My go-to pre-made bar. You’ll have to keep your eyes open for these, I can find them at some airports, but not others. I try to buy them ahead of my trips and add to my carry-on.
  • Dried Fruit: Before you buy, check for sugar and ingredients to make sure there aren’t added sugars or sweeteners.
  • Refrigerated Section: Some of the larger newsstands will have a refrigerated section. You can usually find a pair of hardboiled eggs, veggies or hummus.

There’s enough to worry about when you travel, don’t let your diet be one of them. You know what they say, preparation is one of the best keys for success.
